We had a really nice 5-day travel in South Iceland. We rented a 4x4 (Dacia Duster) and been to quite some places.
Here is a video I made in the honour of this trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OLTAkTf9Gs
Day-by-day list of activities:
We spent the day pretty much in Reykjavik. The city is pretty small and easy to tour by foot. Activity-wise, we did whale-watching (see the video for some photos).
Accommodation in Igdlo Guesthouse.
We started by visiting the Thingvellir Park. Then we moved to Laugarvatn Fontana, a very nice geothermal SPA experience -- definitely suggested. Then we moved on to the Great Geysir Area, seen the angry Strokkur bursting water a couple of times. Then we moved on to the huge Gullfoss waterfall. On our way to the hotel we also visited the Kerið crater.
Acommodation in Hotel Fljótshlíð.
Our first stop was another huge Seljalandsfoss which has a very nice pathway to walk behind. The very next step was yet another massive waterfall, Skogafoss. From there we passed by the Myrdalsjokull Glacier ande moved on to the Door Hole in the sea, Dyrholaey. Then we stopped at the nearby city Vik. Then we passed by the Eldhraun lava field. Then we tried to go ti Laki, but seing how far it is and how bad the road is, we decided not to. Yet, our effort was more than rewarded -- on the way we bumped into Fjaðrárgljúfur, which was one of the landmarks of the trip to my opinion. Then, after some fooling around and hiking we went straight to the hotel.
We started by passing by Nupsstadur, and old farming site. Then, driving by the Lomagnupur mountain, the Skeidararsandur sand plain and the Skeidararjokull glacier, we arrived at the National Park of Skaftafell where we did hiking on the Ice (Vatnajokull National Park). Then we visited three amazing glacier lagoons, the Fjallsjokul glacier lagoon, the Breidalon lagoon and, last but definitely not least, the Jokulsarlon lagoon. In the night, we searched for the Northern lights, and we saw them for a very brief period -- the sky was really cloudy throughout our visit.
Accomodation in Gerdi Guesthouse.
We went to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon to see it one more time in the daylight. Then we went to Reynisdrangar. Then, we went to the very west near Blue lagoon. Before going in to the Blue lagoon, we visited the Seltun hot spring. After the Blue lagoon we visited the Gunnuhver hot springs. Then we went back to Reykjavik, tried out some whale meat for the dinner.
Accommodation again in Igdlo Guesthouse.
Overall, it was a pretty dense and fun itinerary. I don't think I would stuff more into a trip like this, and apart some minor points, I honestly wouldn't even change it much.
